By definition stress is our emotional and physical reaction to pressure that is put upon us in a constant fashion. Stress is our response to life’s constant strains. The signal given to the adrenal glands tells them to produce more adrenaline and cortisol which is then in turn released into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream these hormones speed up the metabolism, speed up the heart rate and breathing rate as well as one’s blood pressure. The blood vessels then open wider to allow more blood to flow to the larger muscle groups, putting the muscles on high alert. The pupils dilate to improve your vision. The liver releases glucose stored there for energy. The body becomes heated from all this rapid activity and one starts to sweat to cool it down. These physiological changes occur when we feel stress. It is our body’s way of preparing us to react quickly. This is how the body can effectively cope with stress by going though the physiological/chemical changes. And, it is the physical changes that trigger the emotional changes and vice versa. So, stress becomes a cycle of repetition between emotional and physical changes.

The reactions that occur in the body are called stress response. Believe it or not these physical changes enhance our ability to cope with stress and perform under it. The stress response however can cause problems to our bodies and minds if it doesn’t stop and reset to neutral.

The physical changes that occur when we feel stress put a person in fight or flight response mode. This is our bodies own defense mechanism when it perceives a threat or danger. The physiological/chemical reaction that occurs in our bodies when stressed is called fight or flight; because it is the same response that gives us the ability to either fight or run away when faced with danger. Fight or Flight is the reaction that is activated when we feel stressed. It may not even be the appropriate response for a situation; but the body automatically goes into this defense mood and responds to the feeling of stress as an attack. The fight or flight response can be activated for things as simple as being late, worried about missing something or having a bad day. When the body feels that the danger is no longer a threat it returns to what is called a relaxed response. The body goes back to normal and the fight and flight response ceases.

When we experience chronic stress we are in a constant fight or flight mode. When this happens we are in a never ending state of tension. This is bad emotionally and even physically. Constant stress takes a toll on a person after a while. The person can become tired, sick, as well as unable to concentrate or think clearly. At its worse the person’s body breaks down altogether with their emotions and they suffer a mental breakdown.

In today’s world we are bombarded by stress and we have to learn how to cope with it so it doesn’t destroy us. There are techniques and tools people can learn to use when they are triggered to feel stress so they can handle it better. It takes a little time to incorporate the tools and techniques to see a response instead of always going into fight and flight mode when stressed.
